Worldwide, women have always been critical to coffee production but traditionally men held all the economic power. 464 female coffee producers in 2004 united to change this and move towards empowerment. Working with a major international organic trade partner OPTCO, they have developed a brand new market for women produced coffee that has served as a fantastic tool for social change and the empowerment of marginalized women coffee farmers. Caf Femenino now works to improve control of revenue, land ownership and acknowledgement for their exceptional farms. The farmers of the Cecanor region where this coffee has been grown have used their funds generated by Caf Femenino to invest in community projects including childrens libraries, schools, health, and nutritional education. As well as programs that build self-esteem, human rights awareness and literacy.
